That's a wrap!

FINALLY!

After some difficulties, I have finally finished my video about marriage equality. I was pretty stressed out about the whole procedure, as it is something I had never really done before, and I knew I had to find actors and a place to film etc!

I ended up filming the video at my workplace, which was really convenient; however, the day I had originally planned to film, one of my actors said he was sick, therefore we had to reschedule! It was quite difficult to find a time all of us were free at the same time, but we managed, although it was a little last minute! The actual filming was quite funny and really enjoyable, I could probably make a blooper reel!

There were a few things that I would reconsider if I were to make another video, for example the lighting and sound of the atmosphere I am filming in, as well as using better equipment! Overall, it ended up coming together really well and I am excited that I now know how to use iMovie (even if I'm not very good at it).

The final outcome ended up differing from my original plan, as I had originally wanted the homosexual couple in the video to be elderly; however, it was quite hard to find elderly people who wanted to participate in the video or had the time. Therefore, the homosexual couple ended up being the same as as the heterosexual couple, however I believe the message was still delivered successfully!

Overall, this assignment has taught me a lot about film, and it is something I would like to get more into, especially by documenting my travels and creating videos!

Week Six Tutorial

I realised today that perhaps acting isn't a career path I should follow, nor is filming as easy as it looks! We had the chance to go out on campus and put our filming skills to the test. I was lucky enough to be paired with Alex who made my filming easier, as he was quite a good actor. I filmed first and just did a couple of simple shots. I started off with a long shot, and my final shot panned in on his face. Alex filmed me afterwards, and he has quite a bit of experience in filming, so there was a lot of things he did differently and he really focused on his angles a lot more. It was good to be paired with him as I was able to learn a little bit about angles and why they are important. I haven't got much experience in editing, so I am excited for next week so I can learn how to put it all together!

Annotated Bibliography

Croome, R 2015, What the 'religious freedom' argument against marriage equality really means, The Guardian, Australia

This article talks about religious freedom in America, and how it is now making an impact upon Australia. This article was important to read, as it helped me understand religious views upon same-sex marriage, and how I can incorporate this into my video.

Mohana, M 2015, Music & how it impacts your brain, emotions, Psych Central, America

This article talks about the way music can impact your emotions and brain activity. I felt it was extremely important to research this, as it will help me to choose wisely when picking music for the video. It is crucial that the music has an impact on the audience in collaboration with the visuals.

7 News 2015, Same sex marriage debate heats up in Adelaide, 7 News Adelaide Facebook Page, Australia

This video talks about a new rainbow coloured walkway being built in Adelaide, in support of same sex marriage. The video discussed how politicians are debating wether it should go ahead or not, as there are other issues to focus on. This video is important, as it shows the relevance and impact the same sex marriage debate has on Australian residents right now.

2015, The Best 8 Marriage Equality Videos From Around The World, Queerty, America

These videos were all made in support of same sex marriage. As I myself am making a promotional video in support of same sex marriage, I thought it was important to go to other sources and get ideas and see what has already been done. This helped me extensively as I was able to think of an idea that has not yet been done, and hopefully make an impact.

Hatch, P 2015, Julia Gillard changes mind to support same-sex marriage, The Sydney Morning Herald, Australia

This article talks about former Prime Minister, Julia Gillard and her recent support of same sex marriage. I believe this article is extremely important, as it shows the support and pressure that other politicians and countries around the world are putting on our current government. It is important that I read and understand different views surrounding this topic to make it as effective as possible.

Treatment

A young heterosexual couple walk into a cafe. The couple order their food and take a seat at a table. The young heterosexual couple begin to hold hands across the table - laughing and flirting with each other. It is obvious that they are in love.

An elderly homosexual couple walks past the young heterosexual couple and begin to give them weird looks. The young heterosexual couple feels uncomfortable as they realise they are being judged by many in the room.

The shop owner walks over to the young heterosexual couple and asks if they could please leave the store as the shops owners religious conscience gives him the right to deny service. The young couple get up to leave - other homosexual customers are are saying rude remarks and giving them disapproving looks regarding their relationship to one another.

The young heterosexual couple realises that people are judging them for being in a relationship - they walk out the door of the cafe holding back tears in their eyes - meanwhile the rest of the customers (homosexuals) go about their day like nothing happened.

Religion

Obviously religion plays an extremely large role in the reasoning as to why people are non accepting of same sex marriage. I know it is an extremely touchy subject, and I would never want to disrespect anyones religion. An article written by The Guardian states, 'The American "religious freedom" movement has made its debut on the Australian political stage' (Croome, R 2015). Throughout the thought process of creating a promotional video based on same sex marriage, I was quite cautious about the whole religious side of things; however, my personal belief is that no matter who you are, you should have the right to marry the person you love. 'The religious freedom movement arose in the US as the final act of defiance by some conservative Christians in the face of more and more states allowing same-sex marriages. It seeks to establish a legal right to refuse services, mostly to gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and interest people, on the basis of the service provider's religious conscience' (Croome, R 2015). Therefore, I have decided that I would like the promotional video to be shot in a cafe/restaurant sort of setting; although, I understand it will be quite difficult to get owners permission to do so!

Music and Emotions

It is evident that music can trigger emotions... we are all guilty of shedding a tear or two whilst listening to a slow Adele song!

When it comes to thinking about making my video, I thought it was extremely important to research the way music can make people feel, and how it can trigger different emotions. 'The brain imposes structure and order on a sequence of sound that, in effect, creates an entirely new system of meaning' (Mohana, M 2015). Therefore, with the help of appropriate music, I want it to fit perfectly with the visuals in help of creating an entirely new outlook on same sex marriage and how the audience perceives it. I have had many different thoughts about what genre music I would like to be played, as I want it to connect on a sympathetic level; however, I don't want it to be depressing!

'Music, though it appears to be similar to features of language, is more rooted in the primitive brain structures that are involved in motivation, reward and emotion' (Mohana, M 2015). As music can connect to someones brain on a level that language cannot, it is extremely crucial that the music chosen for this video is perfect, as I am really aiming to change the way people feel.

"Same-sex marriage debate heats up in Adelaide"

Two days ago, 7 news Adelaide uploaded a video regarding a debate over the new rainbow walk in support of same sex marriage.

When same sex marriage became legal in America, Facebook introduced a rainbow filter which allowed Facebook users to create a rainbow colour over their original image. The rainbow colour was  obviously a sign homosexuals used to represent themselves on the day; however, Facebook showed it off to the world... and now Adelaide is considering a rainbow coloured pavement.

This to me, makes me want to create a video with natural/bright lighting. I want the whole video to be as natural as possible, to create a real effect and relevant emotions to be displayed. I don't think I will use rainbow colours as such; however, bright colours will be used a lot more than apposed to darker colours.
